Michelle Turner – THE MAGIC OF NATIONAL COMPETITION
Michelle’s lifelong connection to calisthenics began in Victoria at the age of six and has been marked by an unwavering passion for the sport. Her dedication has seen her evolve from a pupil to a coach, witnessing the sport’s remarkable growth while preserving its core values. This enduring love for calisthenics drives her commitment to fostering opportunities and connections within the community.
As a coach, Michelle found inspiration in giving Queensland Juniors their first-ever chance to participate in a state team. For her, the National calisthenics competitions represent more than just a platform for showcasing talent—they embody the spirit of collaboration and learning, allowing athletes to build relationships across clubs and experience diverse coaching styles. Michelle is continually inspired by the hard work and positive attitude of her athletes, who strive to better themselves with every session.
Coaching a state team in Queensland comes with unique challenges, particularly the vast geographical distances many pupils face—some traveling 4-6 hours for a single class. Through it all, maintaining a balance between the competitive aspect and the fun, positive experiences of being in a state team is key to keeping morale high. For Michelle, the journey has been rewarding, with the team’s hard work and eagerness shining through every week.
Michelle’s current team consists of 18 dedicated first-time state team members, who continually impress with their perseverance and adaptability in mastering routines far more complex than those at their local clubs. A standout moment for her was the very first class, marked by the girls’ enthusiasm and commitment. To foster camaraderie, Michelle prioritizes understanding the motivations behind each athlete’s involvement, ensuring they feel valued for their significant commitment. At the moment, her favorite routine is Free Exercises, as the team has truly embraced the characters and brought the choreography to life.
Looking ahead to this year’s AusCaliCarnivale, Michelle is most excited to witness the Queensland Juniors experiencing the magic of a national competition for the first time. She believes upcoming changes like minimal rules across age groups will bring fresh opportunities to calisthenics, and envisions a future where a truly inclusive national event unites all states and territories.
Beyond the competitions, Michelle reflects on the profound impact of the calisthenics community on her life, forming lasting friendships across states and clubs. She aspires to continue contributing to the sport, ensuring it evolves and flourishes for her daughter and future generations of calisthenics enthusiasts.
